Chatroulette Gamification of Website and Introduction of Reputation System

Abstract

Chatroulette is a company that focuses on connecting users for random video conversations. As the system evolved in usage and complexity, it became imperative that positive behaviours are encouraged and negative behaviours punished. Various methods have been implemented to help achieve this; however, there is still room for improvements. Reputation systems have gained prominence in their application for establishing trust among participants in online communities. At their core is user feedback obtained both implicitly and explicitly. We collaborated with Chatroulette on introducing an explicitly driven reputation system to help achieve its goal of encouraging positive participation and good behaviour in the system. Using an agent-based simulation to build a model of the Chatroulette system, we introduced a reputation system driven by user actions. This work documents our approach, implementation, results and recommendation.
